Plastic Free Razor

Every once in a while a product comes along that I love soooo much, I want to give it a shout out and encourage others to give it a try.

Today I’m going to tell you why I love my Leaf Razor and why you should get one for yourself if you don’t already have one.

Leaf makes reusable razors for all of your shaving needs so this post is for everyone and anyone who shaves 🙂 They even make a reusable razor for dermaplaning.

Note: I am not getting paid by Leaf to promote their product. I’ve had my leaf for several years and this is my personal opinion.

Disposable Razors

Plastic disposable razors are unfortunately the norm. Boo!

They are super wasteful and really expensive.

Facts on Disposable Razor Waste

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 2 billion razors are thrown away each year

You might ask? Are disposable razors recyclable? Our friends at Waste Away Group tell us the answer is yes and no. With the emphasis on no.

The plastic and metal are technically recyclable materials, but when they are attached like when in razor cartridges, they become a mixed commodity and will most likely be landfilled if the plastic and metal are not separated before the recycling process begins. I’m paraphrasing but this is essentially what the Waste Away Group says.

Who out there is separating the metal blades from the plastic cartridge in order to recycle their razor cartridge?

I’ll wait.

I hear……crickets.

Yup. No one is doing this. Myself included.

It is insane to expect anyone to separate the plastic from the metal blades. Come on now.

Disposable Razor Packaging

Let’s not forget about the packaging that you also get when you buy reusable razor cartridges.

Some you can find packaged in a cardboard box, but inside that box each individual cartridge is packaged in plastic. Why is this necessary?

Some cartridges are wrapped in a huge plastic bubble like thing. Totally unnecessary. So wasteful.

Cost of Disposable Razors

This Venus Women’s Razor found at Target costs $14.99 and it comes with two refills. A 6 count pack of Venus refills costs $21.99 at Target. So you’re getting the Venus razor and 8 blade refills for $36.98 plus tax.

Personally I think that is a lot of money for what you’re getting.

Leaf Razors

The eco-friendly Leaf Razor is made completely out of metal. Buy it once. Keep it forever. It has a triple-blade pivoting head to provide you with a super close shave even in hard to reach spots.

You fill your Leaf razor with metal razor blades which are 100% recyclable. Hooray!

If you want, you can put your used blades into a handy-dandy recycle tin to store them safely prior to putting them in your recycle bin.

The razor itself comes in a cardboard box. No plastic at all. Thank you Leaf!

My Experience With Leaf

When I first held my Leaf Razor in my hand I was a little surprised by how heavy it was. But the heft also told me my razor was built to last. I honestly think this will be the only razor I will ever have to purchase. It’s hand-down quality.

Truth be told, I was a tiny bit intimidated by it. I don’t know if it was the look, or the heft, but I was timid. I shaved with an extra gentle hand.

It was fantastic! Maybe I was just wanting it to be true, but I swear it was the closest shave I ever had and it felt like the hair took longer to grow back than with disposable razors.

Leaf Blades

One of the cool things about a Leaf Razor is it works with any brand of metal razor blade. Yup! They are so eco-friendly that they didn’t build a razor that requires a proprietary blade. Thank you again Leaf!

This way, if they ever go out of business (and I hope they don’t), you don’t have to worry that you won’t be able to refill your razor.

Of course Leaf naturally sells blade refills. They come in a cardboard box, and each individual blade is wrapped in paper. Yup. Wrapped in nothing but paper. In case you’re wondering, I’ve never come close to cutting myself while replacing a blade 🙂

Cost

Leaf sells two styles of razor: a triple blade razor and a single blade razor. I’ve got the triple blade so I’m writing about that style.

They also sell a dermaplaner, so check it out if you’re into dermaplaning.

The Leaf Triple Blade Razor costs $84.00 and comes with a 10 blade starter pack. A pack of 100 blades currently costs $19.00. (Note: this appears to be a sale price). Add that together and you’re looking at $103.00.

I know that is a lot of money. But here’s the thing. Those blades will last you for years. Years

And unless you lose your razor, you will only ever have to buy the blades. A small package of 50 blades is available from Leaf for $12.00 and will last you for over a year.

Personally, I feel this is a significant upfront cost for a razor. But the ROI is 100% worth it.

Plus, you will be getting a super close shave and feel good knowing that you are plastic free and zero waste when it comes to shaving.

Worth Mentioning

It occurred to me while writing this that I needed to mention one drawback to the Leaf Razor. Replacing the blades is easy, if you have good dexterity with your hands. I have a few people in my life who do not have full use of their hands and I think they would struggle to replace the blades in a Leaf Razor. If this is you, please take this under consideration.

Have you tried a plastic free razor? If you haven’t, would you consider making the switch?
